The Four Way Test Speech Contest in District 5810 invites local high school students to speak about various subjects while applying Rotary’s Four-Way Test – which asks four ethical questions about the things we think, say, and do:
RULES
This competition is for all students in grades 9 - 12.
The broad theme will be Rotary's Four Way Test.
Inspirational speeches should mention all the Four Way Test ideas and include facts, stories & quotations.
Previous topics have included bullying, supporting a friend, and overcoming discrimination.
This should be an original speech, written just for this contest. The time is 5 – 7 minutes.
The District contest will feature the winners of the local Club’s contest.
It is recommended that the Clubs use the same Judging Sheet as the District will use. Judges at the District level will score each participant’s speech based on the Judging Sheet linked at the bottom of this web page. If the speech is less than 4:45 or more than 7:15, points will be deducted.
The speech may be memorized or notes may be used, but reading is discouraged. A memorized speech is certainly more impressive. Speakers will give their name, but not their school, city, or sponsoring club.
DEADLINES Deadline for registration AND payment: April 15, 2025. Entry fee is $50.00. (Melissa Rotary Club sponsors Melissa High School Interact Club applicants, paying the $50 entry fee. Sponsored applicants will be scheduled for a "practice run" at a Melissa Rotary Club meeting prior to April 19th.)
Prizes are $500, $250, $150, $100 and $50. The District contest is from 9:00 am to 12:30pm on April 19, 2025. The location is the North Texas Performing Arts Center in West Plano. https://ntpa.org/plano/

Meeting room setup & Refreshments provided by Kathy Mixson David Powell, Texas Master Naturalist, Blackland Prairie with the McKinney Heard Museum Don't miss finding out about the impact of development on wildlife in our community and in Texas. Everyone is welcome at this important community event hosted by the Melissa Rotary Club. Come hear David Powell, a Texas Master Naturalist with the McKinney Heard Museum, on April 24th at 7pm at the Melissa ISD Board Room, 1904 Cooper St.
Heard Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary Contact Dave Powell, powell1217@yahoo.com to help maintain the Heard gardens or to become a trail guide. https://eddiebashacollection.com/collection/dave-powell “The Code is so important; it’s not figured out, it’s not written down, it’s just kind of a philosophy of the cowboy arts,” he says. As an active member of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA), he believes the job of cowboy artists is “not about painting pretty pictures or painting pictures that sell for a lot of money, it’s about the heart. It’s about the Western soul—the soul of the livestock, the cattle and horses, and the culture that goes with it.” Dave grew up the son of artists Nancy McLaughlin and Ace Powell. As a youngster raised in Agpar, Montana, where his father worked as a packer at Glacier National Park, Ace met Charles M. Russell at his summer home, Bull Head Lodge. Russell encouraged Ace to become an artist. Just like his father was mentored by America’s leading cowboy artist, 57-year-old Dave has watched over this generation’s young men who share that same desire to chronicle the West. Dave believes mentoring those young artists is as important as his own work. That’s not the least of the reasons why we love him. Source: True West Magazine |
